Students fly in for Olympics trip of a lifetime and share culture and sporting success
Students from across England flew to China to witness the opening of the Olympic Games and take part in the final stages of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust’s (SSAT) ‘Towards the Olympics’ project. More than 160 students from nine schools witnessed the opening ceremony of the 29th Olympic Games. The trip is the final stage in the SSAT’s ‘Towards the Olympics’ educational project, which has involved English students sharing cultures, language and sporting activities with their Chinese counterparts, as well as developing an online resource for students of both countries. The trip featured a 12-day tour around schools in China, meeting partner schools in Beijing and Hong Kong as well as a kite-flying event celebrating the Olympics and featuring English and Chinese students. The students were also involved in BBC News School Report, giving them the opportunity to make their own reports from the Olympics for a real audience. One of the students, Alex from Saddleworth School in Oldham, reported on a handball match: Norway v Angola
On Monday 11 August our school went to watch the Olympic games, we were watching the women's handball.
The first game started at 2pm and was a group A match between Norway and Angola.
Angola were the first to score. After this Norway took over the game, out classing Angola in speed tactics and defence. At the end of the first half the score was to 14-6 to Norway.
In the second half Angola tightened their game but Norway was still too strong for them and the final score was 31-17.
After the game I interviewed a Norwegian supporter who thought her team played well but that they didn't have to play at full level. The best player in her mind was Tanja Larsen.
