Wildern School

Wildern School were extremely keen to become involved with the Towards the Olympics project. It is a perfect way of combining an international link with our specialist performing arts college status. Although we already have European contacts (with schools in Spain, Germany and France) through our annual international week celebrations, we wanted to broaden our links further whilst capitalising on the huge interest our pupils have in the Olympic Games.

Our objectives for the project are:

  • To develop independence of learning, fostering the skills and attributes for life long learning;
  • To give some of our students the opportunity to visit our link school in either China or Hong Kong;
  • To give a group of students an insight into the lifestyle and education of young people in a different country;
  • To allow pupils and teachers to communicate with each other using the online learning community;
  • To develop our own use of ICT by allowing staff and pupils to video conference with our partner school;
  • To investigate the possibility of a long-term link with a return visit in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic games in London;

We have decided to focus on a group of year 9 students to begin this link as they will still be at Wildern during the summer games in 2008. So far we have put a welcome page from the headteacher in the Wildern School section of the Towards the Olympics online community. We have also added some activity ideas for the link with our partner school.

These ideas have led to pupils in both England and Hong Kong recording a typical day in their life, which will be added to the site soon. In this way we hope to start the project with pupils gaining an awareness of the similarities and differences between their daily lives. We have also organised a video conference with our partner school in Hong Kong, and we hope to do the same with another school in Beijing.
