Maseru English Medium Preparatory School has become the first school in Lesotho to affiliate to iNet.
The school has a long history of educating the children of international companies and embassies. It now serves the local population but still has links to overseas charities and other international groups.
Lesotho's chief education officer, Paramente Phamotse, recommended the school as an ideal advocate for iNet in Lesotho. Few schools have real access to technology but the deputy head of the school, Phaello Ntsonyane, has worked hard to create an excellent computer lab and website: www.maseruprep.co.ls
In October 2007, I visited the school and presented the new principal, Richard Free, with the iNet certificate. The school is keen to act as a centre for links with the iNet family and we hope to hold a series of workshops at the school in 2008. They have good resources that other less fortunate schools in Maseru, Lesotho’s capital, could benefit from.
Phaello has led and supported the government in their ICT initiatives and it was a real joy to work with him in his lab. He is keen to work with us in making iNet a real inspiration for local schools. Unlike in South Africa, Microsoft have not given free software to education and all schools are finding the purchase of good education software difficult even if they have computers.
I was also able to present the school with some network software donated by 2Simple, one of our major supporters for the Africa project. 2Simple have worked with us in South Africa and set up a reference site at a school on the Cape Flats.
