The internet revolution and its
implications for education
Workshops with Professor Yong
Zhao
November 2006
Overview
The internet has already transformed the lives of
billions of people. It has delivered the ‘global village’ and it
has begun to redefine what skills are valuable for living and
leading in the global and digital ‘worlds’. In these workshops
Professor Yong Zhao discussed how the internet has transformed
our world, and the impact on teaching and learning.
The workshops considered
whether it is a mistake for schools to only consider ICT as a tool
to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of delivering
traditional content. Instead, should schools reconsider what they
need to teach in order to prepare citizens for the global
economy?
The workshops addressed the
following key questions:
- What skills do students require to
live in this new digital world?
- How can teachers respond to these
changes?
- How should global and digital
citizenship be incorporated into teaching and learning?
- In what ways can the internet enable
students to become autonomous learners?
