Glenn Mayoh has been Head of Abbs Cross School and Arts College in the London Borough of Havering since 1996. The school has been identified by the schools inspectorate as 'particularly successful', and is a member of the SSAT's high value-added and most improved clubs.
Glenn has spoken about the specialist dividend and raising achievement in Melbourne, Belfast and Amsterdam, believing passionately in giving young people the very best opportunities possible. He is described by the schools inspectorate as 'an excellent, charismatic and inspirational Headteacher.' He puts it down to having a great school, terrific team of staff and some amazing children.
Abbs Cross School and Arts College is in its fourth year of designation as a specialist arts college. Interestingly it took four attempts to achieve specialist status funding. The school resisted changing tack and considering other specialisms because of a passionate belief that the performing arts can have the most significant impact on school ethos, helping to transform and raise attainment.
The pay-off for this approach is plain to see at the school. Using performance to channel pupils' energy into tangible benefits was the catalyst for school improvement. Nurturing a sense of empathy, understanding the needs of others, team building, self-confidence and positive attitude now permeates the curriculum. Through our arts week and beyond, our learners are able to demonstrate their abilities across all areas.
The specialism has developed trust, a sense of pride and a climate of high aspiration which allows for a dynamic, creative and risk-taking culture. This maximises opportunity and is synonymous with excellence.
