Focus on the learner

In June 2006 schools in New Zealand gathered to debate the challenges of 21st century schooling. In partnership with the University of Waikato's, Educational Leadership Centre, the workshops demonstrated how personalising learning approaches can ensure genuine equity and excellence in schools.

These workshops were also the launch of iNet New Zealand. Belonging to iNet gives you the opportunity to share innovation, knowledge and best practice with schools around the world.

Workshop review

Angela White and Terry Wood from St Margaret's College found the workshop a positive and stimulating day:

'Having the opportunity to listen to specialists such as David Hargreaves and his team explaining their approach to personalising learning was a positive and stimulating experience. It was very helpful to hear about practical, school-based research, as it put the whole programme into context. Coming from a school that is currently evolving and looking at ways of innovating learning, it was particularly interesting to learn about what exciting programmes other schools are putting in place.

'As we were introduced to the nine gateways, we took the opportunity to relate these directly back to our own school situation. It was very pleasing to find that the work we have in place at present is very much in line with personalising learning. The gateways, however, provide a structure into which we can slot our current programmes and identify gaps that need attention.

'We found the gateways to personalised learning are a very effective means of structuring whole school development for improving learning for the 21^st century. St Margaret’s College is a year 1 to year 13 independent girls school in Christchurch, New Zealand, and is keenly awaiting membership of iNet. As a progressive school where staff are actively involved in designing programmes to enhance more effective teaching we are looking forward to the benefits of contributing and sharing experiences with like minded schools.'
