A workshop for teachers in both mainstream and special
schools
Tuesday 14 September 2010, The Dyscovery Centre, University of
Wales Newport
Professor Barry Carpenter will be leading an iNet Wales
workshop on complex learning needs. Professor Barry Carpenter is
internationally recognised as a leading academic in special
educational needs and is playing a key role in driving iNet’s work
in this area as iNet Chair for Special and Inclusive Education.
This workshop recognises how the changing pattern of childhood
disability has brought new challenges to schools. Many primary,
secondary and special schools report significant changes in the
children entering their schools. Children with special educational
needs (SEN) in mainstream schools are also more complex.
Do you have a student in your class who
is not responding to tried and tested learning activities?
Do you have students who you think have been mis-diagnosed?
Do you have students diagnosed with more than one special
educational need?
This workshop seeks to generate a debate and discussion that
will impact directly on the learning of children with complex
needs, through a creative dialogue with their schools and teachers.
The debate will focus on the growing number of students within our
schools with complex needs and how that is challenging our current
pedagogical knowledge and practice.
Suitable for all leaders and teachers in primary, secondary and
special schools
By working with Professor Barry Carpenter, educators in primary,
secondary and special schools will gain valuable insights into how
children with complex needs learn. Further outcomes include:
- reaching a shared understanding defining complex needs
- identifying the key challenges facing schools in educating
students with complex needs
- gaining a deeper understanding of how to promote positive
mental health for children with SEN.
