In 2006 participants at the first international workshop produced a unanimously agreed communiqué on the future of schooling. They stated that there should be a global sense of moral purpose in education based on five self-evident truths. These statements will form the basis for the second international workshop:

• Vast inequality exists within education which is morally unacceptable and practically detrimental to the common good.
• Globalisation has shrunk the world into an interdependent and interconnected village. Harmony in this village is vital to future prosperity.
• Children are differently talented and schools should strive to cultivate different talents and help all children realise their potentials.
• School leaders are at the forefront of educational innovation and transformation. Working together they can transform their systems.
• Education systems and schools in different cultures have developed effective practices and policies which are invaluable sources of inspiration for others.

One of the recommendations from the communiqué was to hold a second international workshop to redefine what skills are valuable for living and learning in a global and digital world. This workshop was held in 2009 in Mauritius and it culminated in delegates signing a Charter for Action which sets out how school leadership should be exercised in the years ahead to ensure success for all students in all settings.

Four key aspects of the iNet Charter for Action include:

• How we respond to the growing numbers of children living in deep poverty, polarisation and exclusion
• How we ensure that networking and globalisation break down barriers and create a climate for meaningful dialogue
• How we prepare students as global citizens through respect, empathy and diversity
• How we prepare students to be leaders and agents of change where the voice of students is sought and honoured.

These four aspects are driving the agenda for the 6th iNet International Conference.
