The concept of personalising learning is founded on the belief that only a fundamentally child-centred approach can ensure genuine equity and excellence in education. Working with schools, Professor David Hargreaves has identified and developed nine gateways through which a school may successfully explore personalising learning.
These publications enable schools to play to their strengths, developing personalising learning through no more than one or two related gateways to begin with, and broadening out from there.
To show how the teaching profession can take the lead in personalising learning through nine main gateways, each of which provides a distinctive angle on personalising learning by ensuring that teaching and support are shaped around student needs.
To show how student voice and assessment for learning put the student at the centre of change, and enable the student to be active in learning.
To show how two gateways − learning to learn and the new technologies − though both in early stages of development, can help make learning much more personalised than in the past.
To show that the new approach to curriculum demands a reappraisal of what it is that people should learn from their education. Competences and ‘essential learnings’ are best developed through themes taught as projects, to create dynamic problem-solving capability.
Under advice and guidance, to consider what your school offers to its students − is it closer to mass production or to mass customisation? Personalising learning requires that all students receive suitable advice and guidance about their studies and futures. Includes a 25-item audit for schools’ information, advice and guidance systems.
To show how two gateways – mentoring and coaching, and workforce development – can help both teachers and students in the journey towards personalising learning.
To show how the final gateway to personalising learning – school design and organisation – brings together the other eight gateways; and to set out an approach to the challenges for school transformation.
