About TEACCH and Project SEARCH
TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication
Impaired Children) is an evidence-based service, training, and
research programme for individuals of all ages and skill levels
with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It is based within the School
of Medicine in the University of North Carolina. The TEACCH
Supported Employment programme follows the general philosophy and
guidelines for practice that have been developed for use in
classrooms and in the home. It has been successful in enabling
adults with ASD to engage in meaningful work within their
communities, often building on practice within schools. (www.teacch.com)
Project SEARCH has been developed in Cincinnati as a transition
to employment programme for young people with learning difficulties
and disabilities. It is a model that has been successfully
replicated across the USA and is proving equally successful on
sites where it is running in the UK. The one year programme is for
students in their final year of schooling. Their goal is to enter
paid, full-time employment having gone through an application
process. The programme requires a partnership between school or
college, employer and supported employment provider. Students are
immersed in the business learning transferable skills acquired
during the year through a series of internships. (www.projectsearch.us)
