The traditional design and organisation of schools does not necessarily make personalisation an easy process. This gateway, however, refers to more than just changes to the design of a school’s buildings, although these are certainly important in realising the goals of other gateways; there must also be changes to the organisation of the school day and year, staffing, ICT infrastructure and pupil groupings.
Many of the proposed changes to curriculum structures can be realised only if the layout of schools is much more flexible. For example, it might be necessary to use lecture theatres rooms or rooms with moveable walls alongside the more traditional classroom. It is important that schools are rebuilt to meet the needs of the 21st century rather than those of the 19th century.
